The origin of Serendipity

The word “serendipity” was coined in 1754 by the politician and writer Horace Walpole, who used it in a letter in which he recounted an accidental but fortunate discovery about an acquaintance:

This discovery indeed is almost of that kind which I call serendipity, a very expressive word which, as I have nothing better to tell you, I shall endeavour to explain to you: you will understand it better by the derivation than by the definition. I once read a silly fairy tale, called “The Three Princes of Serendip”: as their highnesses travelled, they were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things which they were not in quest of.

Client monitor presets

Version 3 of Serendipity Blackmagic and version 4 of Megarip introduced a user configurable monitor application. The first time the software is run, the user need to either load or create a new layout. For new users the process can be a bit intimidating so here are 2 layouts I find useful. Depending on your platform, you might need to adjust the size of your monitor window to make everything fit correctly. This is due to different default fonts and button shape and size for each platform.

This one I call dual thumbnail and shows both an imaging and rendering thumbnail. This will only work with the upcoming 3.1 (Blackmagic) and 4.1 (Megarip) release. You can still load it into the current version, it is just that the 2 thumbnail windows will both show the imaging thumbnail as previous versions did not have a rendering thumbnail.

Dual-Thumbnail

Right click here to  download this layout. Once downloaded, use the “load” option of the layout menu in the Serendipity Client Monitor to create a new window using this layout.

This one has a slightly different layout and I use it when fixing bugs. It has a single thumbnail but has a much wider queuemanager which allows me to monitor dpi, width, height, pagesetup, file size and status at a glance.

Single-Thumbnail

Right click here to  download this layout. Once downloaded, use the “load” option of the layout menu in the Serendipity Client Monitor to create a new window using this layout.

Virtual press imposed jobs

For years customers have been asking for the ability to use the virtual press with imposed jobs from the Fuji Celebra and Brisque rips. The good news is that the functionality has just been added to the development branch of version 3.1.
The bad news? You will have to wait till the release of version 3.1 to get your hands on it.
