If you are running Serendipity Blackmagic or Megarip on Mac OS X 10.4 or later you can get a small speed boost by disabling Spotlight indexing on the Serendipity folder. Blackmagic and Megarip write a lot of temporary files while processing jobs and indexing these is a waste of time.
To disable Spotlight indexing on the Serendipity folder do the following:
- Bring up System Preferences by selecting it from the Apple menu
- Select Spotlight.
- Click on the Privacy tab.
- Click on the + sign and add Applications->Serendipity to the list of private folders
- Close System Preferences
- That’s all there is to it.
Here are some of the timings I got on an 17″ iMac with an 1.8GHz Intel Duo chip.
Spotlight Indexing of Applications/Serendipity On:
Imaging time: 00:01:39 for job 19532 GOLF TEXT.job Page 015 (IMPOSITION 15) Imaging time: 00:01:19 for job 19532 GOLF TEXT.job Page 016 (IMPOSITION 16)
Spotlight Indexing of Applications/Serendipity Off:
Imaging time: 00:01:21 for job 19532 GOLF TEXT.job Page 015 (IMPOSITION 15) Imaging time: 00:01:06 for job 19532 GOLF TEXT.job Page 016 (IMPOSITION 16)
As you can see from the above timings the time saved per job is small but it certainly adds up if your are processing hundreds of jobs per day.
